The LTE offers its warmest congratulations: FAU President Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger has appointed Dr. Heinrich Milosiu from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits, who has been a lecturer at the LTE for over ten years, as an honorary professor on 4 September 2023.
Dr.-Ing. Heinrich Milosiu was born in Regensburg in 1976 and studied electrical engineering-electronics-information technology at FAU, graduating as a graduate engineer in 2002. He then began working as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in the „Integrated Circuits and Systems“ department / „RF and Microwave IC Design“ group. In 2012, he was then appointed Senior Engineer there. His technical focus is on integrated CMOS PLL synthesisers and low-power UHF radio receivers in the µA range for UHF frequencies in CMOS technologies. In 2009, he began his work on the development of wake-up receivers, for which he was then awarded a doctorate in engineering from FAU in 2012. The thesis, supervised by Professor Robert Weigel, is entitled „Integrated UHF radio receiver with low power consumption and low response time for interference-free data transmission“. The power consumption of the 868 MHz CMOS wake-up receiver technology presented at that time was about 50 µW. Heinrich Milosiu subsequently led several IC development teams and was able to reduce power consumption further and further with improved receiver versions. An important push came with the development of a tri-band receiver. The wake-up receiver chip could now receive wake-up telegrams simultaneously on three radio frequency bands (433 MHz, 868 MHz, 2.4 GHz). As part of a pilot project for the establishment of the Erlangen Leistungszentrum Elektroniksysteme (LZE), the chip was finally realised with a significantly improved range of functions and lower power consumption. Heinrich Milosiu then further developed this research prototype and brought it to series production readiness. The current solution has a power consumption of only about 5 µW. The patent portfolio associated with the systematic development has been decisively expanded to date. Heinrich Milosiu holds 23 patents, 18 of which have been granted in the meantime. In May 2022, Heinrich Milosiu, together with his Fraunhofer colleagues Frank Oehler and Markus Eppel, received the prestigious Joseph von Fraunhofer Prize for their „many years of targeted work on this technically excellent solution for drastically reducing the energy consumption of IoT devices“. Incidentally, all three prize winners were awarded their doctorates at the LTE, Mr Oehler under the supervision of Professor Dieter Seitzer and Mr Eppel and Mr Milosiu under the supervision of Prof. Robert Weigel.
