RADCOM-HETNET

Intelligent vehicles of the future will use their own sensors for not only applications such as autonomous driving, but also information from other vehicles. For this information to be transmitted, reliable communication is essential. To ensure this, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Chair of Electronics Engineering, Chair of Electrical Smart City Systems) is researching solutions together with the Technische Universität Berlin (Institute of Telecommunications Systems). In the RADCOM-HETNET project, we are investigating how radio (for example, IEEE 802.11p) can be complemented with radar-based communication. For this purpose, the radar sensors of modern vehicles are to transmit information to other road users in addition to distance measurement by modulating data onto the radar signal.

The Chair of Electrical Smart City Systems is particularly involved in the evaluation of channel characteristics at 77 GHz, with special emphasis on typical scenarios such as platooning and intersection assistance. For example, it is necessary to model the influence of overtaking and shadowing by other road users in typical traffic scenarios (urban, rural, highway). In addition to channel modeling, however, the design of the radar technology in such combined systems is also an important issue, which is being implemented by FAU in cooperation with the Chair of Electronics Engineering.
